Có thể nói, “cuộc chiến năm ngày” đã ẩn giấu đằng sau các bên tham chiến là mâu thuẫn địa - chính trị giữa Nga và Mỹ. Lần đầu tiên từ khi kết thúc sự đối đầu hai cực Xô - Mỹ, hai bên đã ứng xử với nhau trong vị thế các đối thủ thực sự. Tuy đây chỉ là cuộc chiến cục bộ giữa hai quốc gia nhưng nó đã làm rung chuyển hệ thống quan hệ quốc tế. 

Những gì đang diễn ra cho thấy, dù cuộc xung đột tại Nam Ô-xê-ti-a đã kết thúc cách đây một năm, song những căng thẳng trong khu vực vẫn chưa kết thúc mà đang được đẩy sang một giai đoạn mới, kéo theo sự gia tăng của tham vọng giành quyền kiểm soát vùng biển Ca-xpi, biển Đen, biển Ban-tích và các cửa ngõ vào Cáp-ca-dơ. Dù rằng, trong cuộc chiến mới này, cục diện của các bên liên quan đã thay đổi.

Rõ ràng sự kiện Nam Ô-xê-ti-a đã phơi bày sự thật về chiến tranh lạnh giữa Mỹ và NATO với Nga chưa bao giờ kết thúc mà chỉ thay hình đổi dạng sang hình thức khác khó nhận biết hơn trong một thế giới không còn đối đầu ý thức hệ giữa hai hệ thống chính trị quốc tế. Những gì diễn ra cho thấy Nga đã giành lại thế chủ động và đi một nước cờ mới trong thế thượng phong để tiến những bước quan trọng liên quan đến tương lai. Nam Cáp-ca-dơ cũng như Trung á đã trở lại vị thế ưu tiên chiến lược và kinh tế của Nga để củng cố vị trí chi phối toàn bộ không gian hậu Xô-viết, đồng thời, ngăn chặn sự lôi kéo của phương Tây đối với các quốc gia láng giềng.

Gru-di-a là một trong số những “điểm nóng” trên ván cờ chiến lược về kinh tế, chính trị ở thế kỷ XXI giữa Nga với Mỹ và phương Tây. Tbi-li-xi đóng một vai trò quyết định cuối cùng trong vấn đề ai sẽ giành được quyền kiểm soát vùng biển Ca-xpi. Đây chính là chiếc chìa khóa để giải quyết cuộc xung đột Cáp-ca-dơ, nơi tiềm ẩn nhiều nguy cơ đối đầu giữa Nga và Mỹ trong khu vực giàu năng lượng thứ hai trên thế giới, chỉ sau Trung Đông.

Có thể thấy, Mỹ không dễ gì từ bỏ không gian chiến lược mà Oa-sinh-tơn và các đồng minh phương Tây tốn khá nhiều công sức mới tiếp cận được. Dư luận không ngạc nhiên khi Tổng thống Mỹ Ô-ba-ma trong chuyến thăm Nga đầu tháng 7 vừa qua vẫn khẳng định cam kết ủng hộ sự toàn vẹn lãnh thổ của Gru-di-a. Tiếp đó, những tuyên bố đầy tính trấn an của Phó tổng thống Mỹ G. Bai-đơn tại Tbi-li-xi trong chuyến thăm Gru-di-a và tái khảng định các cam kết đối tác chiến lược với nước này. Bằng cách đó, Oa-sinh-tơn chứng tỏ không từ bỏ quyết tâm bảo vệ lợi ích chiến lược của họ ở Gru-di-a, nơi có vai trò và vị trí then chốt ở Cáp-ca-dơ.

Oa-sinh-tơn rất biết rằng nếu cứ công khai chơi con bài Gru-di-a chống Nga, thì Mỹ sẽ phải đối mặt với đòn trả đũa của Mát-xcơ-va trên những vấn đề quan trọng hơn như: I-ran hay áp-ga-ni-xtan.Tuy nhiên, dù chính quyền Tổng thống B. Ô-ba-ma chuyển sự quan tâm sang áp-ga-ni-xtan và các nước Trung á lân cận, song Cáp-ca-dơ vẫn sẽ là trọng điểm chiến lược của Mỹ và NATO. Vì thế, trước thái độ cứng rắn của Mát-xcơ-va, Oa-sinh-tơn cũng không nhân nhượng, nhưng hình thức ứng phó sẽ bớt trực diện hơn.

Thế nhưng, với sự tồn tại của chính quyền của Tổng thống M. Xa-a-ca-svi-li và sự hậu thuẫn của phương Tây trong chiến lược hạn chế ảnh hưởng của Nga trong không gian hậu Xô-viết, thì dù quan hệ Nga-Mỹ có ấm lên từ chủ trương “tái khởi động” của Tổng thống B. Ô-ba-ma, nhưng vẫn chưa đủ để hóa giải những mâu thuẫn trong các toan tính chiến lược giữa hai bên. Bởi những chính sách của Mỹ và NATO đối với Nga không bao giờ thay đổi. Đó là kiềm chế và loại trừ ảnh hưởng của Nga tại khu vực mà Mỹ và NATO coi là “khu vực có lợi ích sống còn” của họ. Và ván cờ địa-chính trị ở Nam Cáp-ca-dơ với những tham vọng và toan tính mà Gru-di-a là quân cờ then chốt sẽ nóng bỏng trong thế kỷ này.
